RIVERDALE, N.Y. ? Manhattan junior Courtney McMahon set up sophomore forward Caroline Morse for the game winning goal in the 20th minute, lifting the Lady Jaspers to a 4-0 victory over Rider (1-9-2, 0-3) in women's soccer action this evening at Gaelic Park. With the assist, McMahon becomes the program's all-time leader accumulating 19 over her career. Manhattan (5-5-1, 2-0) remains undefeated in league play, improving to 2-0 in the MAAC.
“It wasn't our best performances of the season, but we were able to finish on opportunities tonight, and that is what counts most,” explained Manhattan head coach Sean Driscoll. “I am pleased to open conference play with two wins. This is a positive step for our program.”
It took the Lady Jaspers just over 19 minutes to warm up, before starting the scoring binge. McMahon helped create the first goal of the contest, when she served a ball into the box from the right corner. The pass connected with Morse, who sent a deflected shot into the right side of the net.
Morse finished with three points on the evening.
Senior back Brittany Duhamel delivered Manhattan's next goal at the 39:12 mark, which sent the squad into the half with a 2-0 edge. Duhamel blasted a shot from 30 yards out into the top left corner of the goal. The Milford, Conn. native leads Manhattan with three goals this season.
Fellow back Jill Beauchamp notched her first goal of the year in the 54th minute to extend the advantage. Beauchamp got a piece of a corner kick served into the box by Morse, and pushed it past Rider goalkeeper Alex Post.
Duhamel and Beauchamp anchored the defensive unit, assisting Lady Jaspers' goalie Alyssa Bachowski secure her second shutout of the season.
In the 73rd minute, freshman forward Megan Lavecchia continued a recent hot streak, scoring her second goal in the last three games. Lavecchia settled a pass from Devon Lutz, and subtly finished in the right corner.
Manahattan outshot the Broncs 17-4.
The Lady Jaspers return to action on Sunday morning as the team is slated to square off with MAAC rival Loyola at Gaelic Park. Game time is scheduled for 10 a.m.
