Jersey City (April 30, 2006)- Manhattan (22-22,5-7 MAAC) swept their MAAC conference double header yesterday against St. Peter's College (17-22,1-9 MAAC). The Lady Jaspers offense exploded in both games, scoring 15 runs in two games verses the Peahens.
In the first meeting, Manhattan scored first on an RBI single by senior
Kiera Fox. Junior
Stefanie Gozdziewski smoked a doubled in the top of the fifth; putting two more runs on the board. Another run scored on an error by St. Peters, which left base runners on for freshman
Danielle Just, who ripped a double scoring two more runs. Freshman
Devon Gustafson had an outstanding day at the plate, going 3 for 4, with a run scored. Gozdziewski went 2 for 4 with three RBI's and junior third baseman Kerry Cook added two more hits. Senior
Jill Medea (15-10) gets the win; junior
Liz Pennino came in and shut the door in style, making the final score of the first game 8-4.
In the nightcap, Fox hit her 11th home run of the season, went 1 for 3, with 2 RBI's and a run scored. Just lead the offense once again with 3 hits and 3 RBI's. Gustafson stayed hot in game two, with two more hits on the day. Junior
Kristin Gelsleichter (6-5) went the distance against the Peahens, scattering six hits, and three runs, then Pennino came in again to close the door and Manhattan won 7-4. Gozdziewski made an outstanding defensive dive in center field, to end the game and keep the momentum flowing into this coming week.
Manhattan plays this Tuesday in a non-conference double header against Central Connecticut at home, 3p.m. Now with a MAAC record at (5 -7) the Lady Jaspers play-off hopes still remain alive as they enter this weekend's final two home series vs. Niagara & Canisius.
