MCGOWAN STEPS UP AGAIN TO HELP WOMEN'S SWIMMING TO THRILLING VICTORY OVER SACRED HEART

Riverdale, N.Y. (November 4, 2006)-A day after Maura McGowan made up a nine-yard deficit to win the 200 Freestyle Relay, the junior anchor specialist needed another big performance if Manhattan Women's Swimming was to defeat Sacred Heart University and extend its program record winning streak to eight. McGowan did not disappoint and out swam the SHU anchor to seal a 51-44 Manhattan victory.

After the thrilling win over Sacred Heart, the Lady Jaspers' streak of eight straight victories in dual meets, dating back to the final contest of last season, would come to an end on Saturday afternoon as Manhattan could not muster up enough points to defeat the University of Bridgeport. The Lady Jaspers fell by a score of 55-39.

Not to be overlooked was the performance of Kellie Monaco in the victory-clinching relay. Only minutes after finishing the 100 Breaststroke, Monaco was called on to replace freshman Megan Goldrick, who was hampered by an injury, in the third leg of the 200 Freestyle Relay. Monaco responded by swimming a new personal record split to put McGowan in position to win the race.

Before being feeling the effects of an injury, Goldrick contributed to Manhattan's point total by taking third place in the 100 Freestyle with a time of 59.08s. She also helped Manhattan start the meet with a second place finish in the 200 Medley Relay by swimming the final leg. Fellow freshman Catherine Chan finished ahead of Goldrick in the 100 Free with her second place time of 58.69s.

Sophomore Megan O'Keefe, who was also part of the 200 Medley Relay squad, captured second place in both the 200 Freestyle (2:04.97) and 100 Butterfly (1:02.10).

Manhattan Women's Swimming, now 7-1 overall (6-0 against Division I opponents), will next be in action on Saturday, November 11 in Western New York where the Lady Jaspers will compete in a quad-meet with Niagara University, Canisius College, and Saint Peter's College.
