PEARL RIVER, NY (April 26, 2003) - The Manhattan College women's lacrosse team defeated Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference foe Siena College 14-9 this afternoon in its season finale at Pearl River High School Stadium in Pearl River, NY.
The Lady Jaspers finish the season 4-10 overall and 2-4 in the MAAC, while the Saints fall to 3-10 overall, 1-3 in the MAAC.
Junior tri-captain
Mary Dudek (Pearl River, NY) led the team in goals with five, while junior tri-captain
Nora Jacquette (Ambler, PA) led the team in assists with five also, one shy of tying the school assists record.
In the first half, Manhattan jumped out to an 11-0 lead before the Saints went on a 3-0 run with less then 11 minutes to halftime. However, that did not frighten the Lady Jaspers as Jacquette found Dudek in the pocket for their third tag team goal of the day at the 3:33 mark, that would be the last goal of the half for a 12-4 score.
In the second half, another assist by Jacquette to Dudek kicked off play for the 13-4 lead. At the 22:19 mark, Siena's Joan Paul scored but Manhattan answered with an unassisted goal by Jacquette at 21:59. With less than 17:00 left in regulation Siena sparked a four goal run in hopes of closing the five-point deficit. However, sophomore goalie
Israpon Pananon (Burtonsville, MD) made six crucial saves that kept the Saints away and end the game with a 14-9 Lady J victory.
Other Lady Jaspers who performed extremely well were junior tri-captain
Alana Fevola (Pearl River, NY), who shot two for three on goal; freshman
Erin Warren (Pearl River, NY), who scored one goal, had one assist, hustled for two ground balls, caused two turnovers and grabbed two draw controls; and Pananon, who made 14 saves in the win.
Siena was led by Stephanie Petrucelli, who had three goals and one assist. Saint's goalie Mary-Elizabeth Dupelle totaled 10 saves for the day.
Despite finishing the season with a .333 MAAC record, Manhattan will not advance to the conference championship held next weekend at Marist.
