FAIRFAX, VA (April 16, 2003) - Manhattan College athletes
Israpon Pananon (Burtonsville, MD), Michanne Campbell (Mount Vernon, NY) and Samantha Griffin (Jersey City, NJ) were named to the 11th Annual Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Team announced today by Black Issues in High Education.
To be selected for the 2003 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Awards, an accomplished athletes of color must demonstrate excellence in the classroom and be a leader in their college and community.
Pananon, who is the primary goalkeeper for the Lady Jaspers lacrosse team, was selected to the Lacrosse Scholar Team. The physical therapy major and volunteer lacrosse coach for young girls received a 3.71 GPA in the Fall '02 for a 3.65 cumulative GPA. Pananon has started in 12 games thus far this season for a total 720 minutes and 161 saves.
Campbell was named to the Track & Field Third Team after accumulating a 3.20 Fall '02 GPA and a 3.44 overall GPA. The elementary education major and active member of the Manhattan College Honor's Symposium currently leads the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in the triple jump at 11.57m (37'11 ?˝").
Griffin, also a member of the track & field team, was named as a Honorable Mention after accumulating a 3.60 Fall '02 GPA and a 3.30 overall GPA. The English education major and avid supporter of health and fitness awareness in her hometown of Jersey City, NJ currently leads the MAAC in the 100m dash at 12.20 seconds and is ranked second in the 200m at 25.58 seconds.
