STONY BROOK, NY (March 29, 2003) - The Manhattan College women's lacrosse team defeated SUNY Stony Brook this afternoon at LaVelle Stadium in overtime 13-12 to capture its second victory of the season. The Lady Jaspers advance to 2-4 overall, while the Seawolves fall to 3-4 overall.
Manhattan jumped on the board early in the first half, scoring two unassisted goals by junior tri-captain
Mary Dudek (Pearl River, NY) and sophomore
Victoria Carman (Freeport, NY) for a 2-0 lead. A goal by Danielle Werner brought Stony Brook to within one before Dudek found the net for her second goal at the 18:10 mark. The Seawolves went on to score three more goals before an unassisted goal by junior tri-captain
Alana Fevola (Pearl River, NY) at the 1:46 mark tied the score. With one minute and two seconds remaining in the half, Stony Brook found an opening to take a 5-4 lead into halftime.
In the second half, an assist from Dudek to freshman
Molly Pheterson (Rochester, NY) tied the score at five. However, the Seawolves' Joanna Katz would score two more goals before Dudek could score her third goal of the day. Stony Brook charged toward the net connecting two more goals to take a 9-7 lead. With less than eight minutes left in regulation, a windmill shot by freshman
Erin Warren (Pearl River, NY) and a rushing attack by Fevola helped Manhattan regain its momentum and tie the score. The Seawolves scored two more goals before an assist by junior tri-captain
Nora Jacquette (Ambler, PA) to Dudek brought the Lady J's to within one point of Stony Brook. With less than 49 seconds remaining in the second half, freshman
Catherine Dunbar (Floral Park, NY) found Dudek on the inside to tie the score at 11 and force overtime.
Without any hesitation Jacquette charged the net to score the Lady J's 12th goal with 1:55 remaining. After a free position goal by Dudek was taken away from Manhattan, Stony Brook scored an unassisted goal to tie the game. With 1:08 on the clock, the ball was passed to Jacquette, who rushed up the field to score the game-winning goal. The Lady Jaspers contained the Seawolves and allowed time to run out for the 13-12 victory.
Dudek led Manhattan with five goals and one assists, while sophomore
Israpon Pananon (Burtonsville, MD) made 15 saves for the win. Stony Brook was led by Joanna Katz, Marrisa Trachtenberg and Werner, who all had four goals.
The Lady J's will return to action Tuesday, April 1st when they travel to Drexel University for a 3:30pm match-up.
