NEW YORK, NY (February 15, 2003) The Manhattan College men's track and field team are in first place with 48 points in the second day of the Armory Collegiate Invitational held this weekend in New York City. Syracuse University trails the Jaspers with 31.50 points for second place.
Leading the way for the men's squad was
Thomas Jacob Freeman (East Greenwich, RI), who not only won the weight throw at 21.62m, but also set a new meet and facility record at the historical 168th Street Armory.
Daniel Gazzola (East Greenwich, RI) also performed well in the weight throw placing second at 17.99m, fourth place went to
Michael Freeman (East Greenwich, RI) at 17.30m and sixth place was rewarded to Anders Constantine (Uddevalla, Sweden), who threw a personal best 16.78m. In the men's shot put, senior
Michael Pellet (Croton, NY) placed sixth at 15.64m and Constantine placed eighth with a personal best 15.26m. Junior
Janek Augustynowicz (Rutherford, NJ) captured second place in the long jump with a leap of 7.19m and fifth in the triple jump with a personal best mark of 14.76m. In the men's 3000m, senior
Matthew Spring (Marcy, NY) ran 8:12.78 to qualify for the IC4A, while sophomore
Daniel McGrath (Lynbrook, NY) ran a personal best 8:28.70. Junior
Kurt Forsyth (Summit, NJ) qualified for the finals in the 200m dash tomorrow after placing fourth at 22.15 seconds. Freshman
Russell Stevens (Westbury, NY) also ran well in the 200m with a time of 22.56 seconds. The men's distance medley relay team
Gavin Cosgrove (Ontario, Canada), Forsyth,
Joseph Van Dyke (Millington, NJ) and Spring placed fourth overall and qualified for the IC4A with a time of 10:11.06. In the 800m, freshman Joshua Conklin (Middletown, NY) ran a personal best 1:55.5 for second place, while Van Dyke also ran a personal best 1:55.7 for third place.
In the women's events, sophomore Rachel McGee (Bellport, NY) captured first place in the 800m with a personal best time of 2:14.3. Freshman Marina Liander (Staten Island, NY) placed sixth in the weight throw with a mark of 15.29m and 11th in the shot put at 12.60m. Junior Karin Larsson (Garphyttan, Sweden) captured fourth place in the shot put with a toss of 13.60m. Senior Stefani Allen (Levittown, PA) qualified for the finals of 200m dash after running 24.73 seconds. Sophomore Teresa Frierson (North Ridgeville, OH) ran 56.59 seconds in the 400m to also advance to the finals. In the women's 4x800m, McGee, Marissa Olivieri (Staten Island, NY), Marisa Rego (New City, NY) and Jamie Yedowitz (Yonkers, NY) placed fifth overall with a time of 9:30.41.
The Jaspers will continue to compete in the second day of the Armory Collegiate Invitational on Saturday. Manhattan will look to capture its seventh consecutive title next Saturday, February 22nd as it host the 2003 MAAC Indoor Championship in Draddy Gymnasium.
