FREEMAN CLOSES SEASON BRINGING HOME THE GOLD

SAN ANTONIO, TX (August 12, 2002) - Manhattan College track and field standout Thomas Jacob Freeman (East Greenwich, RI) completed a long arduous 2001-02 season on Saturday after winning the gold medal in the hammer throw at the 2002 North America Central America Caribbean Championships (NACAC) held in San Antonio, Texas.

Freeman, who was selected to the United States under 25 team, threw 66.49m (218'2") to surpass United States' Carey Ryan, who captured the silver (61.58m) and Canada's Mike Sagert, who was awarded the bronze (48.73m).

The sixth time All-American was selected to join the United States team after placing 11th (65.97m) at the USA Track & Field National Championships in June.

The competition, which featured 45 track and field events, took place at the E.M. Stevens Stadium on the campus of Trinity University. Hosted by the San Antonio Sports Foundation, the event is sanctioned by the NACAC organization and USA Track & Field. This was only the second NACAC Under-25 Track & Field Championships. The first competition was held in Monterrey, Mexico, in 2000.
