Best’s Fifth Homer Not Enough for Baseball in Series Finale v. Canisius

POMONA, NY – The Manhattan Jaspers baseball team (15-25, 8-16 MAAC) fell to the Golden Griffins of Canisius University (14-22, 10-11 MAAC) by a score of 8-5 on Sunday afternoon from Clover Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After the Jaspers fell behind by three runs early, the Green and White responded with three hits in the first, highlighted by a Vincent Samuel double down the right field line.
  • Two batters later, Trevor Hansen continued his stellar play as of late, with a single up the middle to drive home both Samuel and Guriyandel Salva for a pair of RBIs and cut its deficit to just one.
  • The Golden Griffins responded with one more run before Manhattan cut its deficit back to one for the second time with a Ryan Lordier sacrifice fly to drive home Hunter Sute from 90 feet away.
  • In the eighth, the Jaspers were off and running rather quickly, with a leadoff blast from Justin Best to the right field seats. Two batters later, Colin Basehore did the same, opposite field to the left field bleachers, and narrowed the Canisius lead to two.

STATS AND NOTES

  • Infielder Vincent Samuel paced the Green and White with a 3-for-5 afternoon, which featured two doubles and crossed the plate once.
  • Outfielder Justin Best dazzled with the fifth home run of his Jaspers tenure in a 2-for-3 afternoon, one run, and one walk.
  • Catcher Andreaus Lewis extended his hitting streak to 13 straight games with a 1-for-4 series finale and worked a walk.
  • Outfielder Colin Basehore smacked his fourth round-tripper of the campaign in a 2-for-4 day, and one strikeout.
  • Relief pitcher Garrett Theile posted three innings, while surrendering two hits and logging two punchouts in 12 batters faced and 30 total pitches tossed.
