Men’s Soccer Falls to Columbia on Monday Night

INWOOD, NY – The Manhattan Jaspers Men's Soccer team (1-4-1) fell to the Lions of Columbia University (1-1-2) by a score of 2-0 inside Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium on Monday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Green and White got off to an early deficit with Columbia striking first just 11 minutes into the match. Prior to surrendering the first, they were just offside but repossessed with a corner kick just five minutes in for a crucial opportunity in their final third.
  • Following an onslaught of attempts from the Lions, with save after save recorded by Ludvig Malberg, the Jaspers were able to capture some rhythm with Henry Hamilton attempting his first and only shot on the night in the 25th minute.
  • Just six minutes later, Head Coach Tom Giovatto decided to make a three for three swap to shake things up, with James Lucas leading the charge. Just one minute into his stint on the pitch, he was able to generate some offense with the teams' second shot of the night, before Max Asplin-Rowley joined the fray.
  • Lucas continued where he left off with an attempt off the Lions keeper to force a corner kick, before a foul in the six, negated any further opportunity.
  • Midway through the second half, it was William Fagerberg who attempted to jump start the Jaspers' attack, but was stopped by Columbia.
STATS AND NOTES
  • Senior goalkeeper Ludvig Malberg set a new career high with nine saves on the night, while facing 23 shots from the Lions.
  • Senior midfielder James Lucas paced the Jaspers in shot with three on the night, with one on target for 59 minutes off the bench.
  • Sophomore midfielder William Fagerberg logged two shots with one on target for 73 minutes on the pitch.
  • Graduate forward Henry Hamilton posted one shot on target in a full 90 minutes.
  • Redshirt Freshman Giovanni Rivera added one shot in 27 minutes off the bench.
