Women's Volleyball Forces Fifth Set Against Siena at Draddy

RIVERDALE, NY – The Manhattan Jaspers Women's Volleyball team (3-22, 1-14 MAAC) fell in its conference contest to the Saints from Siena University (13-16, 8-7 MAAC) in five sets (25-21, 20-25, 21-25, 27-25, 17-15) inside Draddy Gymnasium on Friday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Manhattan set the offensive tone early, capturing first of the six nine points, capped off by a dual block from Emilia Kuzniar and Abby Morreale.
  • After the Saints grabbed a late 20-19 lead in the opening set, a 5-0 run was highlighted by three kills from Katie Powers.
  • Powers continued her hot stretch to end the first in favor of the Jaspers, killing four of the final six points.
  • Fiona VanDyke's service ace grabbed another early advantage for Manhattan in the second set.
  • Following Siena taking control midway through, Morreale joined Emma Francesconi with a pair of kills to bring the Jaspers back within two at 16-14.
  • On the brink of dropping the set, the Green and White ripped off four consecutive points, with Teresa Garza registering a service ace. Doga Diraz of the Saints tied the match immediately after.
  • Siena flipped the script in the third, never relinquishing a lead of two or more points after facing a 3-1 quick deficit.
  • With the lead growing up to as high as six midway through, it was Diraz once again putting the stamp on the set with a kill, putting the Saints up 2-1.
  • The Jaspers put their energy back into Draddy, as another dual block from Morreale and VanDyke sent the crowd into a frenzy to start the fourth.
  • Leading 19-17, three straight from the visitors including a service ace saw the Green and White go down one.
  • A VanDyke solo block ended the prolonged set, as Manhattan forced a fifth after a 27-25 fourth set.
  • Sarah Emmons grabbed a service ace of her own, putting the Jaspers up 8-6 at the fifth set switch.
  • Powers' kill put the home squad in the driver's seat with her kill at 15-14.
  • Siena scored the final three points, with Natalia Clifford going back-to-back to end the five-set thriller.
STATS AND NOTES
  • Freshman right side Hanna Kaczynska led the way with 23 kills, just one short of her career-high.
