Women's Basketball Drops Opener to Rhode Island

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The Manhattan Jaspers women's basketball team (0-1), after an impressive third quarter, fell to the Rhode Island Rams (1-0) by a score of 52-38 inside Draddy Gymnasium on Monday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Defense shined in the opening sequences, as neither team was able to net a point in any fashion until nearly the five minute mark.
  • Colette Mulderig used her size inside to grab a pair of layups to put Manhattan within two midway through the first.
  • A 9-0 Ram run created some separation near the end of the period, giving Rhode Island a nine-point advantage after one.
  • Kristina Juric opened up the scoring to open quarter two inside the paint, for the Green and White's seventh and eighth points on the night.
  • Brianna Davis and Ishuana Hunter put together a pair of buckets towards the end of the half, but another short spurt put the visitors up 20 by the buzzer.
  • The third frame flipped the script in favor of Manhattan, with four of the first six points coming at the line via Davis and Hana Mühl.
  • Lighting up the Draddy crowd, Davis' drive to the lane called for an and-one, converting at the stripe and putting the Jaspers within 14.
  • Withstanding a couple of responses from the Rams, the home team continued to earn trips to the free throw line, eventually doing so 16 times in a span of ten minutes.
  • Juric's layup with under a minute to go brought Manhattan back within seven, igniting the bench and crowd.
  • Davis tallied the first seven points of the final quarter, including a make from beyond the arc.
  • Ishuana Hunter scored the final points for the Jaspers, for Manhattan's 16th point in the paint.

STATS AND NOTES

  • Senior guard Brianna Davis set her second-highest scoring total of her Jasper career, with 18 points on five-for-12 shooting.
  • In her Division I debut, Graduate forward Colette Mulderig netted seven points with two field goals and three points from the stripe.
  • 11 of the Jaspers' 17 third quarter points came at the free throw line, resulting in a 17-4 frame.
