Women's Basketball Falls After Tight Fourth Quarter to Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Manhattan Jaspers women's basketball team (0-6), in the first game of the 32nd annual Navy Classic, fell to the Midshipmen of the United States Naval Academy (5-1) by a final score of 59-52 inside Alumni Hall on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Agar Farrés Garcia got the scoring started within 15 seconds, finishing inside after also winning the jump ball.
  • Hana Mühl tallied the next two buckets for the Green and White, putting the visitors within three.
  • Both Brianna Davis and Mühl helped the Jaspers put 12 up on the scroeboard in the frame, with the latter netting a layup after a steal with 15 seconds left.
  • Zanai Barnett-Gay continued her plethora of scoring in the early goings of this contest, accumulating 10 of the Mids' 17 points by the nine minute mark of the second quarter.
  • As Navy took a double digit advantage, Mühl got Manhattan back to a nine point deficit margin off a three-pointer.
  • With Davis knocking down her pair of free throws from the stripe, Mühl beat the buzzer to grab her 11th point by the halftime break.
  • Kristina Juric got things going in half number two with a quick layup, followed shortly after by Davis to put Manhattan back inside three points.
  • After extending their advantage to seven, Autumn Taylor scored her first career collegiate points from beyond the arc, with Davis supporting with four points both before and after the freshman's feat.
  • Barnett-Gay continued her dominance on the stat sheet scoring her 16th and 17th points prior to the third quarter horn, giving the Mids the upper edge once more after 30 minutes.
  • Davis used another pair of free throws to knot up the contest at the 8:30 mark.
  • Tatianna Collins' three point play was completed after she was fouled on her made layup by Julianna Almeida, giving the Jaspers the lead for the first time since 2-0 on Garcia's opening basket.
  • With two minutes to play, Manhattan stayed within reach at just a three point deficit, but Mary Gibbons knocked down a massive shot beyond the arc to take a six point lead with only 85 seconds to play.
  • Barnett-Gay provided some insurance increasing that number to seven, and the Jaspers weren't able to recover by the time the final horn came buzzing.

STATS AND NOTES

  • Senior guard Brianna Davis led the way in scoring with 18 points, knocking down all six attempts from the free throw stripe.
  • Senior guard Hana Mühl posted a new season-high 14 points off six-for-nine shooting and two made shots beyond the arc.
  • Graduate forward Agar Farrés Garcia pulled down another double digit effort in rebounding with 11, as well as contributing four assists.
  • Manhattan shot at its best rate in the third quarter, with a 46% clip.
