JUPITER, FL – Manhattan Jaspers' Men's Golf alums Chris Calabro '14 and Mark Delzio '14 claimed victory in the US Doubles Golf Amateur Championships on October 27-28 at The Bears Club.
"What these two former Jaspers did really needs to be recognized," said current Head Coach
Keith Prokop.
"Any tournament that has arguably the greatest golfer of all time attached to it is something that needs to be celebrated. Not only does it represent making the university proud, but the entire Met Section really shows the quality of golfers who come out of this section and this University. I have gotten to know Chris and learn about the program from their coach, Jerry Wood, over the years, and I will say I know they are great representatives of the university, and we couldn't be happier for this accomplishment."
Leading up to the US Doubles Golf Amateur Championships, Calabro and Delzio finished as runners-up in the inaugural MGA/MetLife Doubles Championship at The Seawane Club in Hewlett Harbor. But we were able to qualify for the Doubles Golf Amateur Championships after the event champions were unable to compete.
The championship event was played over two days and 27 holes. After starting four strokes under on the front nine, the former pair of collegiate teammates teamed up to show their dominance on the national stage, where they closed the opening day at 11 under with a total round of 61.
The next day, the dynamic duo continued their momentum with four consecutive birdies to open the third round. Both Calabro and Delzio finished with an 18-under score and a whopping total of 90 to finish best in the field by 4 shots, catapulting them to a 4-shot win and a total of -18 for the 27 holes.
"Winning the U.S. Doubles Championship was an unforgettable experience," said Chris Calabro '14.
"Marc (Delzio) and I both went to Manhattan University, so it was special to share this moment. Playing great golf on a national stage and then having Jack Nicklaus hand us the trophy is something I'll always remember. I'm grateful for my time at Manhattan and proud to share this news with the community."
