POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – The Manhattan Jaspers Women's Volleyball team (2-11, 0-4 MAAC) fell to the Red Foxes of Marist University (4-11, 3-1 MAAC) in a five set thriller (25-18, 21-25, 23-25, 25-20, 10-15) inside the McCann Arena on Friday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Seven of the first nine Marist points came off emphatic kills, stretching out an early 9-3 home lead in the first set.
- Abby Morreale's kill and a service ace from Helenn Montilla shortened the margin to two at 13-11
- Following six unanswered points from the Jaspers, a brief spurt of two from Marist made the score 20-18, before back-to-back-to-back attack errors spoiled the Red and White's hopes, giving the first set to Manhattan 25-18.
- A Katie Powers kill tied the second set at 14 apiece, setting the next dance up to be as closely contested as the first.
- While Hanna Kaczynska trimmed Manhattan's deficit to three at 24-21, Marist quickly put the second set away to knot the contest up.
- Even with an early 7-3 advantage for the Red Foxes, the Jaspers continued to claw their way back into the third set, as more attack errors gave the Green and White a late 20-19 lead.
- Fiona VanDyke tied the set once again at 23-all from a Hunter Kwan assist, but back-to-back points put Marist back up two sets to one.
- The fourth set proved to be the most in Manhattan's favor, with a VanDyke service ace putting the visitors up five 22-17, with another ace from Kaczynska sealing the deal.
- After the Jaspers grabbed a 9-8 lead in the decisive set, Marist scored seven needed points out of the last eight to secure the victory.
