Women's Soccer Overcome By Late Score, Fall to Niagara

LEWISTON, NY – The Manhattan Jaspers Women's Soccer team (3-4-4, 2-3-0 MAAC) dropped its conference contest Wednesday afternoon against the Purple Eagles from Niagara University (5-4-1, 2-3-1 MAAC) by a score of 3-2 at Niagara Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • As Niagara's first two shots weren't able to get on target, a late penalty on Samantha Setteducato set up the Purple Eagles for a penalty kick.
  • Caitlyn Gratton from the home team put home her opportunity in the 14th minute to break the ice.
  • Amaya Hill put together the first quality chance for the Jaspers in the 18th minute, when her chance to the lower right corner was saved by the Purple and White's Julia Poissant.
  • In time for the 31st minute, Niagara doubled up on their early lead after a shot from Baillie Colling snuck past Molly Brunk
  • Just over 10 minutes later, the Jaspers found themselves on the board thanks to a score from Scarlett Smith for her second on the season, assisted by Mayah Wheeler.
  • While action got much quieter in the second set of 45, Manhattan got the opportunity they needed in the 75th minute, with Lauren Ahearn striking home for her second consecutive match off the feed from Amaya Hill.
  • Less than three minutes later, a bicycle kick from Niagara's Izzy Schmidt proved to be the go-ahead goal that would last, securing the 3-2 win.
  • Hill launched an on-target chance with less than 15 seconds to play, but it was denied by Poissant.
STATS AND NOTES
  • Each team finished with 12 shots, with the Jaspers winning the on-target battle 8-5.
  • Manhattan was able to set up its corner offense often, with four second half chances to Niagara's zero.
  • Junior forward Lauren Ahearn scored in her second consecutive match, the first Jasper to do so since Amaya Hill on August 24 and 31.
  • Junior forward Amaya Hill registered three shots on goal, her highest mark since five against Wagner.
