Mangina Joins Vulin's Staff

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Head coach Heather Vulin is elated to announce Phyllis Mangina as the newest member of the women's basketball coaching staff

"Phyllis Mangina has been a trailblazer in women's basketball as a player and as a coach," said Vulin. "To have her wealth of experience, talent, and love for the game on our staff has been an incredible hire for our program.  We are all excited to work with her!"

Mangina arrives in Riverdale after one year in Brooklyn as the Associate Head Coach of the Terriers. Some of her primary responsibilities while with the Terriers included practice preparation, player development, scouting, and game planning.

"When Coach Vulin asked me to join her staff at Manhattan I did not hesitate to say yes! Coach Vulin's vision for Women's Basketball and the College's ideals and commitment to student growth align with my values," said Mangina. "Coach Vulin has worked tirelessly to build this program to a championship level. I am excited to join a staff and team of extraordinary women as we take the next step and bring MAAC Championships to Manhattan College."

Prior to her arrival in Brooklyn, Mangina served in the MAAC for six years as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Saint Peter's. While in Jersey City, Mangina recruited and coached two MAAC All-Rookie Team players and one All-MAAC 2nd team player. Mangina scheduled the Peacocks non-conference schedules in addition to scouting opponents and assisting in the game plan for each opponent.

Before arriving at Saint Peter's, Mangina was the head coach of Seton Hall for 25 years, from 1985 to 2010. While at the control of the Pirates, Mangina guided the team to a total of 352 wins during her tenure. She took the Pirates all the way to the Sweet 16 in the 1993-1994 season and ended the season ranked 14th in the nation. The following year, the Pirates returned to the Big Dance the following year and made to the Second Round.

In 2010, Mangina brought in one of the best recruiting classes the Pirates had ever seen, with the class finishing in the top-25 nationally. Mangina developed five Honorable Mention All-Americans, 19 Big East All-Conference players, 13 Big East All-Freshman players, two Big East Scholar-Athletes, two WNBA players, and 20 have played Internationally.
