Manhattan Mourns The Passing Of Gary Halpin

Kilkenny, Ireland - Manhattan Athletics mourns the loss of 2000 Hall of Fame inductee Gary Halpin '88, who passed away on February 23.

Halpin won the 35 lb. weight throw at the 1988 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championship, set school records in the hammer throw (230'5") and 35 lb. weight throw (68'3") and was a four-time All American. He also represented Ireland in the 1987 World Athletics Championship in Rome.

Upon returning to Ireland in 1989, he became a professional rugby player. Halpin joined the Wanderers, toured North America with the Irish senior squad, and the following year made his debut against England at Twickenham. He won his 11th and final cap of a five-year international career in a 1995 World Cup quarterfinal defeat to France.

Off the field, he spent two decades teaching in England at St George's College, Weybridge and the Oratory School outside Reading. Halpin subsequently returned to Ireland to take up a position as Head of Boarding at Cistercian College, Roscrea, County Tipperary.  

Predeceased by his parents Ann and Tom. Beloved husband of Carol and loving father of Bentley, Leonie and Lenka. He will be sadly missed by his brothers Patrick, John and Mark, sisters Barbara and Bethann, Bentley's fiancée Beckie, his extended family and friends.
