Riverdale, NY - Manhattan Athletics mourns the death of Stephen Dillon '53, a former member of the Jaspers' track and field program and a Manhattan Hall of Fame inductee. Dillon passed away November 7 at the age of 89.
A member of the Jaspers' throws squad, Dillon specialized in both the weight throw and hammer throw. As a junior in 1952, he claimed the hammer throw title at the Penn Relays and the Metropolitan Outdoor Championships. A year later, Dillon became the AAU National Champion in the 35-lb. weight throw, recording a meet-record distance of 59'10-1/4". That season, he recorded six first-places finishes in the event. Dillon also earned indoor AAU and IC4A championships during his time at Manhattan, and he was inducted into the College's Hall of Fame in 1998.
Dillon served in the U.S. Army and later worked as a managing director at Merck in Rahway, NJ until his retirement in 1993. He also served as the longtime district leader of the St. Vincent DePaul Society at the Church of the Visitation in Brick, NJ, and was a founding member of the St. Francis R.C. Church in West Nyack, NY.
Dillon is survived by his wife, Mary Catherine; two sons, John Dillon and his wife, Jennifer, and Dr. Stephen Dillon and his husband, Philip Maguire; three daughters, Maureen Dooley and her husband, William, a member of the Manhattan College Board of Trustees, Catherine Folan and her husband, Patrick, and Dorothy Bosley and her husband, John; as well as his sister, 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Dillon was predeceased by his two brothers, Daniel and Thomas, and two sisters, Ann and Mary Helen.
A funeral mass was offered on November 10 at the Church of the Visitation, with interment following at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Middletown, NJ. To send condolences to Dillon's family, please visitÂ
