2002 Men's Lacrosse
Sponsored by James Amandola '02 and Gerard McCloskey '05
The 2002 Manhattan Men's Lacrosse team made history as one of the most dominant squads in school history.
The Jaspers went 11-6, including posting a perfect 7-0 ledger during conference play, before defeating Saint Joseph's and Mount St. Mary's at the MAAC tournament to claim the first championship in program history.
Led by 2002 MAAC Coach of the Year
Tim McIntee and bolstered by future Hall of Famers
James Amandola,
Justin Otto,
Nick Silva and
Eugene Tanner, Manhattan ripped off a school-record eight-game winning streak.
Paced by MAAC Offensive Player of the Year Nick Silva's program-record 27 assists and 21 goals, Manhattan found the back of the net a school-record 178 times.
Tanner also earned MAAC Rookie of the Year accolades with a school-record 51 goals and 23 assists while Otto added 34 goals and 13 assists as all three players would go on to earn All-MAAC recognition.
Defensively, Manhattan was led by Amandola, who registered a NCAA-leading .683 save percentage, which is also the 10th-best in NCAA history. He added a sparkling 7.40 GAA and was named MAAC Co-Defensive Player of Year.
All told, the program had a hand in four of the five major MAAC award winners while Anthony Antonelli earned Verizon Academic All-Region honors to go along with all-conference accolades in joining Amandola, Tanner and Silva on the First Team. Otto, Don Femminella and Chris Hawkins rounded out the Manhattan contingent on the All-MAAC Second Team.
Amandola saved his best for last and was named the MAAC Tournament MVP before yielding just 12 goals to No. 5 Georgetown as the Jaspers put a scare into the Hoyas. He then capped his collegiate career in the USILA North/South All-Star game.
In the history of Manhattan College Men's Lacrosse, the 2002 Jaspers continue to be the program standard by which all teams are compared.
