Middletown, NY – For a second consecutive year, Manhattan men's soccer alumnus Robert Schimpf '72 has been elected into a prestigious Hall of Fame, this time as a recipient of the New York State Boys Soccer 2018 Hall of Fame class.
The honor banquet took place on Saturday, November 10 at the Middletown Holiday Inn. Former Jasper Head Coach Dolph Rotter, Schimpf's teammate William Osbourne '72 and current Manhattan Head Coach
Jorden Scott were in attendance to support Schimpf.
"The entire evening was an incredible experience, to say the least," proclaimed Schimpf. "But it was even more special to see Dolph, Ozzy and Jorden there. What does it say about them to come up and join me for this occasion? I was on the verge of tears when I saw them. It was terrific."
Schimpf has made a lasting impression on New York soccer in multiple facets, including his collegiate playing career and as a coach. Following his Jasper career in 1971, he began his work in coaching that has culminated in over 500 wins and eight sportsmanship awards at the club level. From 1977 to 1992, Schimpf served as the Men's Open Coach and Chairperson for the Empire State Team Long Island Region.
In Suffolk County, Schimpf impressed at both the collegiate and high school levels. In 1979 and 1980 as the head coach, Schimpf guided the Suffolk Community College Sharks to a pair of Region XV and NJCAA National Championships. He later moved on to high school, where he has garnered over 300 wins as a varsity coach. He was a founding member and president of the Suffolk County Soccer Coaches Association, being an active participant for 30 years. Currently, Schimpf operates the varsity team for Bayport-Blue Point High School.
The honor comes a year after he was a part of the Manhattan College Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2017 last November. Schimpf is Manhattan's all-time scoring leader with 41 goals during his three-year varsity career while holding the top mark for goals in a season with 16.
