SOLLENTUNA, Sweden – Former Manhattan College track & field star Malin Marmbrandt won the women's triple jump at the 2016 Swedish Athletics Championships over the weekend. She also took part in the long jump and finished third.
In the triple jump, which was held on Friday, Marmbrandt had the three best efforts of the competition and won by 24 centimeters. She got out to a distance of 12.97 meters (43 feet, ¼ inch) in the first round, then improved that mark to a personal-best 13.11 m (45'10¼) in round three. Marmbrandt also had a 13.06 m (42'6¾) leap in the fifth round. Rebecka Abrahamsson, who attends the University of Cincinnati, took second with a jump of 12.87 m (42'2¾).
On Sunday, Marmbrandt was in action in the long jump. She was one of three jumpers to reach the automatic qualifying distance of 6.00 m (19'8¼) in the preliminary round, getting out to 6.01 m (19'8¾) on her second attempt. In the finals, Marmbrandt had a leap of 6.05 m (19'10¼) in the second round before improving to 6.12 m (20'1) in round four. After recording a mark of 6.13 m (20'1½) in the fifth round, Marmbrandt's final jump was another 6.12 m effort.
She placed third behind 2016 Olympian Khaddi Sagnia (6.69 m, 21'11½) and Erica Jarder (6.36 m, 20'10½), a finalist at last year's World Championships.
Earlier this summer, the 2010 Manhattan graduate represented Sweden at the European Championships in Amsterdam. She and Jarder tied for 19th place in the long jump with a leap of 6.33 m (20'9¼).
