Babcock, Bowen Named to Academic All-District Team

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Manhattan College infielders Amanda Babcock (Haverstraw, N.Y.) and Kate Bowen (Newtown, Conn.) have been selected to the Capital One Academic All-District I Softball Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).  They will now both be included on the ballot for the Capital One Academic All-America Team.

Those student-athletes with a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher and have completed at least two semesters at their institution are eligible for the Academic All-District Team.  Babcock and Bowen are the first Jaspers to receive Academic All-District honors since Liz Strein was a second team selection in 2006.

A senior physical education major, Babcock is a two-time Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) All-Academic Team selection.  She has started 93 consecutive games at shortstop, including all 46 contests this season.  Babcock ranks third on the team with a .326 batting average and is currently on an 11-game hitting streak.  Her 29 runs scored and eight doubles are the second-most on the team, while her 44 hits and 26 RBIs are the third-highest totals on the squad.

Bowen, a junior physical education major, has started every game at either second base or pitcher in 2013.  She leads the Jaspers in batting average (.367), hits (61), doubles (12) and runs scored (34), while ranking second on the squad in home runs (6) and RBIs (33).  In addition, Bowen paces the pitching staff with nine victories, a 3.81 ERA, 10 complete games, 19 starts and 106.2 innings pitched.  A First Team All-Northeast Region and Second Team All-MAAC selection last season, Bowen was also named to the MAAC All-Academic squad in 2012.

The Jaspers (21-25) concluded the regular season by splitting a doubleheader at Quinnipiac on Thursday.  Manhattan (9-7 MAAC) now must wait to see if it qualifies for the MAAC Tournament, which begins on May 9 at Marist's Gartland Field.
