Softball Concludes Final Midweek Series Against Marist Wednesday

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The Manhattan Jaspers softball team (15-34), in a rare non-conference doubleheader against a MAAC opponent, fell in both of its contests against the Red Foxes from Marist (31-19), by the final scores of 10-2 and 12-3 at Gaelic Park on Wednesday afternoon.

GAME ONE: Manhattan 2, Marist 10

  • Offense wasted no time for the Jaspers, as Lainey Brown and Kaitlyn Moody's singles to the outfield scored both Brianna Estevez and Natalye DeBus, respectively, in the opening frame.
  • The next two frames stayed relatively quiet, although the third saw each team leave a combined five on base.
  • Ready to respond in the fourth, Marist used a one out triple to leverage a later RBI single to get on the board.
  • Next up to the plate, Samantha Rogers hit a home run to left field to give the Red Foxes their first lead of the day at 3-2.
  • Across the fifth and sixth, another round-tripper and an RBI single increased the visitor advantage to four after six frames.
  • A final RBI single and home run combo in the top of the seventh gave the game its final score of 10-2 to end the matinee.
GAME TWO: Manhattan 3, Marist 12
  • Contrary to game one, the first inning didn't see any runs come to the plate, leaving us scoreless headed to the second frame.
  • Marist's Peyton Pusey launched the first of two home runs for the Red Foxes between the second and third, with Rogers following up with the latter for a 4-0 lead midway through the third.
  • In the home half, Kendall Penny singled to bring home Isabella Coulman, pinch running after DeBus' walk, to put the Jaspers on the scoreboard.
  • After an insurance run in the fourth from Marist, Jamie Falotico and Angelina Gencarelli used a pair of RBI singles to right field to score Brown and Sophia Hannappel, cutting the deficit to two after the fifth.
  • Following an RBI single in the top of the sixth, a subsequent grand slam gave the visitors some breathing room heading into the final frame.
  • In what was the fifth of the game, a final home run in the seventh put the road team up by nine and later ended the nightcap.
