RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Four players--Nicole Anderson (Hamden, Conn.), Alex Cohen (Nashua, N.H.), Mikki Guiton (Schwenksville, Pa.) and Maeve Parahus (Congers, N.Y.)--have singed National Letters of Intent to join the Manhattan College women's basketball program for the 2013-14 season, it was announced today. The quartet all committed to the Jaspers during the NCAA's Early Signing Period.
"I'm thrilled to add all four of these student-athletes to the Jasper family," Head Coach John Olenowski said. "They're all top-notch students and athletes, and terrific kids as well."
Anderson is a 5-foot-8 guard at Hill Regional Career High School. A four-year starter, she has been named one of the top 25 girls' basketball players in Connecticut every year since 2010. Anderson was selected honorable mention all-state last season after leading the Panthers to their second consecutive state championship. She earned MVP honors in the 2011 Connecticut Class LL State Championship Game. Anderson was also the 2009 Connecticut state free throw shooting champion. In addition, she was chosen to the College Showcase All-Tournament Team in 2010 and her AAU team, the Connecticut Lady Blazers, won four straight State of Connecticut gold medals from 2009-12.
"Nicole is a great athlete who gets to the basket well," Olenowski said. "She can score off the dribble or shoot the three and is a very sound defender."
Cohen, a 5-foot-9 guard at the Tilton School, was a nominee for the Gatorade New Hampshire Player of the Year last season. Over the past two seasons, she has led the Rams to an impressive 45-7 record and a pair of appearances in the NEPSAC championship game. She was named a NEPSAC all-star, as Tilton won the NEPSAC Class C championship in 2010-11. In addition, the team has won the last two Lakes Region titles.
"Alex is a sound fundamental guard," Olenowski noted. "She can swing at all three (guard) positions. A very good three-point shooter, she can also take it to the basket. She's a very intelligent player, and a very good defender, as well."
Guiton, a 6-foot-1 center, attends Perkiomen Valley High School in the Philadelphia area, where she earned Defensive Player of the Year honors last season. She was elected honorable mention All-Pac-10 and honorable mention all-area by the Pottstown Mercury in 2011-12. Guiton was also a member of the all-area team in 2010-11, when she ranked among the Top 10 in the league in scoring. She becomes the first girls' basketball player in Perkiomen Valley history to earn a Division I scholarship. Guiton played AAU ball for the same Runnin' Rebels program that produced current Jaspers Shayna Ericksen (Hackettstown, N.J.) and Monica Roeder (Marlton, N.J.).
"Mikki is a tremendous athlete and very strong inside on both the offensive and defensive ends," Olenowski said. "She has a nice soft outside jump shot, and she can also drive. In addition, she's a top-notch rebounder and defender."
A 6-foot-1 guard, Parahus comes to Manhattan from Albertus Magnus High School. She earned all-state, all-section and team MVP honors while helping the Falcons make three consecutive Section 1 semifinal appearances. Parahus averaged 18 points per game last season after being named the team's Most Improved Player as a sophomore.
"Maeve's a flat-out tremendous outside shooter who can also take it to the rim or pull-up for a jump shot," Olenowski said. "She's also a sound defensive player and she rebounds well. A very good athlete, she brings us great versatility."
They join a program that will lose four players to graduation next season. The 2012-13 edition of the Jaspers returns to the court on Friday, Dec. 28, when they visit Monmouth at 3 p.m.
