Huntoon Sets Single-Season Digs Record In Senior Night Rout

Box Score

2012 Manhattan Volleyball Yearbook

RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Playing in her final match as a member of the Manhattan College volleyball team, Kelsey Huntoon (Monroe, Mich.) broke the Jaspers' single-season digs record on Saturday night, as Manhattan (15-15, 10-8 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) concluded the 2012 season with a 25-7, 26-24, 25-13 victory over Saint Peter's (1-31, 0-18 MAAC) at Draddy Gymnasium.  Huntoon tallied 15 digs on the night to end the season with 598, shattering the old mark of 584 set by Ashley Watson in 2006.

Huntoon, who was honored alongside fellow seniors Julie Bies (Massapequa, N.Y.), Jamie Collareta (Islip Terrace, N.Y.), Maddie Heck (Corte Madera, Calif.) and Alexa Lampasona (Remsenburg, N.Y.) prior to the match, entered the contest two digs shy of Watson's record, and she topped the mark midway through the first set.

"It's unfortunate we didn't get to play on Wednesday," Head Coach Mark Jones said.  "Kelsey only needed a few more digs for the single-season high.  We're really proud of her about that.  We had some personal accomplishments, but especially for the team, we wanted to go out on a winning note."

The Jaspers' offense, meanwhile, was on fire in the opening set.  Manhattan slammed 16 kills and committed just one error in 34 attempts, hitting .441 as a team in the frame.  After falling behind 3-2, Manhattan ended the set by scoring 22 of the final 27 points.  The Jaspers used a 4-0 spurt to turn that 3-2 deficit into a 6-3 lead, then went on a 5-0 spurt to extend their advantage to 11-4.  Manhattan broke the set open with a 10-point run on Collareta's serve, and Mariana Furquim (Curitiba, Brazil) finished off the 25-7 set win with a service ace.

Saint Peter's rebounded in the second set, jumping out to a 6-1 advantage.  The Jaspers slowly chipped away, evening the score at 13-13 on a kill by Sydney Volovski (Oswego, Ill.).  After the sides traded the next eight points, Manhattan finally took its first lead of the set when a Heck kill made it 18-17.  Leading 20-19, the Jaspers went on a 4-1 spurt to reach set point at 24-20.  However, Saint Peter's fought off all four of Manhattan's set point opportunities, forcing a 24-24 deadlock, before a Lampasona kill gave the Jaspers another chance to close out the set.  Juliana Behrens (Honolulu, Hawaii) slammed a kill to put away the set, 26-24, and give Manhattan a 2-0 lead in the match.

Manhattan scored four of the first five points in the third set, then seized control with a 13-2 spurt that made it 18-5.  The Jaspers extended their cushion to 21-8 before a 4-0 Saint Peter's run brought the Peacocks back within nine at 21-12.  Juliana Behrens slammed a kill to stall the Saint Peter's rally, and Manhattan claimed four of the final five points to win the set, 25-13, and claim a 3-0 match victory.  The Jaspers hit .409 (11 kills, two errors, 22 attempts) as a team in the third set.

"I'm really happy, for the seniors especially.  They've put in a lot of hard work over the last four years," Jones said.  "They've improved so much, and, more importantly, they're just really great people.  They're going to do great things after this.  I'm really proud of them."

Furquim pounded 19 kills on .471 hitting to go along with nine digs, three aces and three blocks.  Juliana Behrens had 10 kills on .444 hitting and added four blocks, while Collareta had a double-double in her final match.  She posted a match-high 16 digs and handed out 36 assists.  Bies contributed 13 digs and two aces, and Heck hit .364 in the match, pounding four kills (including one on match point) without an error.  Lampasona tallied five kills in the victory.  Manhattan hit .308 (44-11-107) as a team and outdug Saint Peter's 64-42.  The Jaspers also outblocked the Peacocks 7-3 and served seven aces.

Lauren Behrens notched eight kills and 10 digs for the Peacocks, while Kassi Wirth also tallied eight kills.  Laura Reinhart had six kills to go along with eight digs, and Jenny Pliska led Saint Peter's with 12 digs.  Kristina Baehr distributed 25 assists for the Peacocks.  As a team, Saint Peter's hit .076 (28-19-119) in the match.

With the victory, Manhattan secured its third straight .500 season, marking the first time the Jaspers have done that since a four-year stretch from 1994-97.  The Jaspers also notched 10 conference wins for the second time in three years to finish fifth in the MAAC.
