RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Manhattan College will join in the celebration of "National Girls and Women In Sports Day" (NGWSD) during the women's basketball team's matchup with Siena on Thursday, Feb. 2. Posters, bracelets and other items will be given away to the first 100 fans in attendance at the 6 p.m. contest, which is the opener of a Manhattan basketball doubleheader. Following the women's game, the Jasper men host Marist at 8 p.m.
This year is the 26th annual NGWSD, which recognizes the accomplishments of female athletes and encourages increased participation in sports. The theme for this year's NGWSD is "Title IX at 40: In It for the Long Run," honoring the 40th anniversary of Title IX, the landmark federal legislation that dramatically altered the landscape of women's high school and college athletics.
"While Title IX has had a huge impact on increasing opportunities for girls and women in sport, there is still more work to do to ensure equity for all," said Dr. Shawn Ladda, the Acting Chair of Manhattan's Department of Physical Education & Human Performance and past president of the National Association for Girls and Women in Sports (NAGWS).
The NAGWS is a century-old organization with the mission of developing and delivering equitable and quality sport opportunities to all girls and women by means of relevant research, advocacy, leadership development, educational strategies and programming in a manner that promotes social justice and change.
