MAYAGUEZ, Puerto Rico - On Monday, former Manhattan College track & field star Aliann Pompey won a silver medal for her native Guyana in the 400 meters at the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. After winning her semifinal heat on Sunday, Pompey placed second in the final, running a time of 52.33 seconds.
"Aliann is having a successful season after finishing fifth at the World Indoor Championships," Manhattan assistant track & field coach Joe Ryan said. "Her next competition will be the Commonwealth Games in India in October."
Pompey is also running the 200 meters in Mayaguez, and she qualified for the final in that event with a time of 23.84 seconds in Tuesday morning's semifinals. The 200-meter final is scheduled for Tuesday night.
First held in 1926, the Central American and Caribbean Games are the oldest continuing regional multi-sport games in the world. They're held every four years in the even-numbered year opposite the Olympics.
