Riverdale, N.Y. (September 12, 2005)--Manhattan Softball broke into the win column on the first day of their fall season on Saturday at the Army Invitational in West Point, N.Y. Junior outfielder
Candice Sheridan belted a third-inning grand slam as the Lady Jaspers downed Army 6-2.
Senior pitcher
Jill Medea started the game in the circle for Manhattan and threw two innings of shutout ball. Junior
Liz Pennino came on to pitch innings three through five and earned the victory. Junior
Kristin Gelsleichter threw the last two innings for the Lady Jaspers to preserve the win.
Earlier in the day, the Lady Jaspers dropped a 12-3 decision to Fordham University. Manhattan, however, did jump out to an early 2-1 lead, as the Lady J's received a leadoff double in the bottom half of the first inning from freshman centerfielder
Danielle Just and managed to push across two runs in the frame. Just hit safely in her first three collegiate at-bats against Fordham, and she also added an RBI base hit in the victory over West Point.
The Lady Jaspers continue their fall season on September 17 as they travel to Garden City, N.Y. to play Adelphi University in a doubleheader.
