After a stellar playing career for the Jaspers, Mariana Furquim begins her first season as an assistant coach.  A native of Curitiba, Brazil, she was a Second Team All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) performer in 2012.

Furquim transferred to Manhattan after one season at UNLV and made an immediate impact on the Jaspers’ lineup in 2011.  She started every match that season, playing in all 115 sets at outside hitter.  Furquim ranked third on the team with 287 kills and fifth on the squad with 233 digs, while also notching 72 blocks and 30 service aces.  She was named MAAC Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 17, 2011 after dominating performances against Siena (16 kills, 10 digs, five blocks, .485 hitting) and Marist (20 kills, 20 digs, five blocks, four aces, .459 hitting).

In 2012, Furquim again started every match, appearing in 116 of Manhattan’s 118 sets.  She pounded a team-high 388 kills and ranked fifth in the MAAC with 3.34 kills per set.  Furquim also tallied 382 digs, 55 blocks and a team-best 27 aces during the 2012 campaign.  In addition to earning Second Team All-MAAC recognition, she was named team MVP.

Furquim will receive her bachelor’s degree in business from Manhattan in May 2014.
