RIVERDALE, NY – The Manhattan Jaspers Women's Volleyball team (2-12, 1-2 Metro), lost to the Gaels from Iona (8-7, 3-0 Metro) in four sets (17-25, 19-25, 24-26) on Tuesday evening inside Draddy Gymnasium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Each side tested the other through the first 18 points, tying at each number from three to nine.
- Iona began to create some breathing room midway through the opening set, as a kill from Helenn Montilla later shortened the deficit to 17-13.
- While two consecutive kills from Katie Powers kept the Jaspers within five at 22-17, Iona rallied for the final three points and secured the first set in their favor.
- Powers logged a service ace en route to Manhattan taking a 6-5 edge early in the second stanza.
- The visitors then went out on a 9-1 stretch, as Emma Koceja made the score 14-7.
- Before the 15 point media timeout, the Jaspers ripped off five consecutive to trim the margin to 14-12, with Karsyn Harris making two kills and Emma Francsconi tallying a service ace.
- Manhattan fell back down five at 17-12, and were unable to get it any closer the rest of the way, falling 25-19 with Iona taking a two-set advantage.
- Starting with a 4-3 lead thanks to an attack error from the Gaels, the third dance saw more even play, knotting up through the first four and eight through 12.
- Francesconi's second service aided the Green and White into grabbing their largest lead of the set at 15-12.
- Continuing to apply the pressure, Harris found another kill to put the Jaspers up 18-16.
- Yet another ace, this time from Kaitlyn Doyle, lit up the Manhattan faithful with a 23-22 lead late.
- Despite a tie at 24-all, Iona found the final two points to win the set and the match 3-0.
STATS AND NOTES
- Sophomore middle blocker Helenn Montilla tallied the highest number of kills with seven.
- Sophomore outside hitter Emma Francesconi recorded two service aces.
- Manhattan hit at their best rate in the opening set, with a .206 clip.
- Junior and Senior setters Ori Briger and Emilia Kuzniar spread the wealth the most, accounting for 28 of the Jaspers' 31 assists.
