NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Manhattan Jaspers baseball team (20-30, 10-19 MAAC) took down the Gaels of Iona University (18-28, 14-14 MAAC) by a score of 6-3 inside City Park on Friday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Jaspers sought a bounce-back effort against their cross-town rival, the Iona Gaels, and opened the game with the bases loaded but came up empty in the first inning.
- Manhattan opened the scoring with Ryan Lordier smacking a triple to drive home Jackson Brinker.
- In the third inning, Vincent Samuel hammered a two-run blast over the fence in left field to score him and Justin Best for a three-spot in the run column.
- The seventh inning featured Hunter Sute finding the gap in left field to score Vincent Samuel, and double up Iona down the stretch.
- With the Gaels threatening, the Jaspers put the stop sign up towards Iona with another two runs in the top of the ninth, courtesy of Samuel's double to right-center. He would score Payton Matthews from third, after pinch running for Justin Best as the leadoff hitter.
- Down the stretch of the ninth, the Jaspers worked with runners on the corners for Hayden Jung-Goldberg and posted a successful sacrifice bunt back to the Gaels' hurler to score Samuel for the sixth and final run of the game.
- On the flip side of the ninth, Garrett Theile slammed the door on Iona and forced the Gaels to strand a runner across at second, following Stephenson's ground-rule double.

QUOTES FROM THE JASPERS
Head Coach Steven Rosen: "That was another great team win tonight. Outstanding pitching on the attack all night long. Some extraordinary high-level defensive plays were made, particularly with two outs to get off the field. And another strong performance at the plate - with a ton of quality at-bats, living on the barrel, and some well executed team offense."
