Softball Loses Final Matchup With Siena Sunday

BRONX, N.Y. – The Manhattan Jaspers softball team (11-27, 6-11 MAAC), unable to generate a hit on the afternoon, fell in its final contest of the three-game set against the Saints from Siena (20-11, 12-4 MAAC), by the final score of 3-0 at Bahoshy Field on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Clear skies awaited the two squads at Bahoshy Field, home of Fordham University in a relocated affair.
  • The Saints applied some immediate pressure in the top of the first, putting runners on second and third with one out. Consecutive flyouts forced by starter Karissa Spring thwarted that initial momentum.
  • Brianna Estevez worked a four pitch walk to leadoff the Jasper order, their lone baserunner until the seventh.
  • Siena loaded the bases in the second frame, but a popup to second base kept the game scoreless.
  • Following two singles in the road half of the fourth, Chloe Cummings' knock up the middle drove home the first run of the game to put the Saints on top.
  • Not to be outdone in the fifth, Cali DeLawder sent a ball past the right field fence for a two-run blast to triple the visitors' edge at 3-0.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, a walk from Samantha Kelly and hit by pitch from Natalye DeBus opened the inning with two runners on for the Green and White.
  • After the initial push, three consecutive putouts ended the no-hitter for Siena's Gracie Goewey, for her 10th win of the season.

STATS AND NOTES

  • Sophomore utility player Brianna Estevez and Freshman shortstop Samantha Kelly were the lone Manhattan players to be awarded a base on balls on the afternoon.
  • Junior pitcher Karissa Spring pitched all seven innings, allowing three earned runs off of 12 hits and striking out two on 95 pitches.
