Harris Sets Career-High In Digs; Women's Volleyball Drops to Marist

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – The Manhattan Jaspers Women's Volleyball team (2-14, 1-4 Metro), completing its brief road trip to Upstate New York, lost its Metro contest to the Red Foxes from Marist (9-9, 4-1 Metro) in four sets (25-18, 28-30, 23-25, 10-25) on Saturday afternoon inside McCann Arena. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A dual block from Katie Powers and Helenn Montilla put the Jaspers on top early in the opening set 4-3. 
  • Manhattan established a foothold with a 10-2 stretch midway through the first, capped off by a service ace from Abby Morreale to increase the margin to 18-11. 
  • Anna Duncan chimed in with an ace of her own down the stretch, as two kills from Katie Powers put the final touches on an opening set win for the Green and White. 
  • Montilla and Emma Francesconi teamed up for a pair of kills early in the second, taking a 9-7 edge. 
  • Marist roared back with to knot things up at 18, followed by three straight and hold a 21-18 advantage. 
  • The visitors then ripped off five consecutive of their own, with a later attack error putting Manhattan at set point in 24-22.  
  • The Red Foxes responded by extending the set, later prevailing 30-28 off a kill from Mallory Reck. 
  • A different tone began the third set, as the hosts scored seven of the first ten points. 
  • The lead was extended to 16-10 following a service error. 
  • Francesconi's service ace helped the squad claw back at 19-all, with a kill from Hanna Kaczynska knotting the set again at 23. 
  • The next two and final points of the set were scored by Marist, taking a two sets to one lead. 
  • Marist continued the trend from the third in the fourth set, going up 17-5 through 22 points. 
  • Laura Hernandez contributed a kill and dual block with Karsyn Harris by the end, but the Red Foxes won the fourth 25-10 along with the match. 
STATS AND NOTES
  • Senior and Sophomore outside hitters Katie Powers and Emma Francesconi combined for 22 kills, as the only two with 10 or more each. 
  • Sophomore and Senior middle blockers Helenn Montilla and Abby Morreale, along with Sophomore outside hitter Emma Francesconi each recorded four blocks. 
  • Francesconi collected three service aces, leading the team. 
  • Freshman outside hitter Karsyn Harris set a new career-high in digs with 12. 
  • Manhattan hit at their best rate in the second set, with a .286 clip.
  • Junior and Senior setters Ori Briger and Emilia Kuzniar spread the wealth the most, accounting for 42 of the Jaspers' 46 assists. 
NEXT UP
Alverson and the Jaspers will return home to New York City next weekend starting on Friday, October 9 when they welcome the Purple Eagles of Niagara. Action from Draddy Gymnasium is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m. and can be streamed live on Jasper Sports Network.
