RIVERDALE, NY – The Manhattan Jaspers Women's Volleyball team (2-13, 0-6 MAAC) fell to the Golden Griffins of Canisius University (5-11, 3-3 MAAC) in straight sets (23-25, 21-25, 23-25) inside Draddy Gymnasium on Friday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Starting off hot, a dual block by Sarah Emmons and Abby Morreale gave the Jaspers an early 5-2 lead in the opening set.
- Fiona VanDyke's service ace capped off a run of five unanswered points to give Manhattan a 12-8 advantage.
- After going up three midway through, a Golden Griffin five point run reversed who had the driver's seat.
- Despite tying ten times in the opening dance, Canisius won the first 25-23 after a Bella Mosquera kill.
- Canisius held another early 13-7 second set margin, after a service ace from Emma Isroff.
- Despite back-to-back kills from VanDyke to cut the deficit to 24-21, an improper alignment ended the set in favor of Canisius.
- In the third, Kaczynska, VanDyke, and Katie Powers got three of the first four points for the Jaspers off kills.
- After five unanswered scores from the Golden Griffins, Manhattan rallied to tie the set at 20 apiece keeping the crowd alive.
- VanDyke laid down another kill to take a 23-22 lead, but Canisius ripped off the final three to secure the match win.
STATS AND NOTES
- Sophomore outside hitter Fiona VanDyke and Freshman right side Hanna Kaczynska combined for 23 of the squad's 30 kills.
- Manhattan hit at its best rate in the opening set at a .259 clip.
- Junior middle blocker Abby Moreale led the way with four assisted blocks, while Kaczynska tallied three solos of her own.
- Senior setter Sarah Emmons played her first match since September 30, assisting on 17 Jasper points.
