Baseball Takes Doubleheader against Norfolk State

NORFOLK, VA – Manhattan Jasper baseball clinched the series over Norfolk State with back-to-back wins, 5-2 and 14-1, over the Spartans in Saturday afternoon's doubleheader at Mary L. Miller Field.

The Jaspers (2-3) and Spartans (2-4) will close out the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at noon.

"Today was a great day for the Jaspers and for us to get a couple of wins. Justin Solimine and Noah Mattera both gave us great starts and pitching was fantastic," said head coach Dave Miller.

Solimine (Gr./RHP) picked up his first win of the season, ending his 5.0 innings of work with two runs on three hits and matched a career-high five strikeouts. Greg Shaw (So./RHP) was credited with the save after 4.0 scoreless innings of relief, only allowing four hits while striking out just as many.

In game one, Manhattan took advantage of Norfolk State's costly errors to take a 3-0 lead over five innings. Sophomore Chase Swain belted a double to center in the top of the second before stealing third and scoring on an errant throw. Another Spartan bobble in the fourth put Drew Wyers on base and Trevor Hansen drove him home with a single to center. Josiah Brown reached on a walk to open the fifth and shifted into scoring position on a third NSU error. A Daniel Perez double scored Brown to put the Jaspers' up 3-0.

Manny Jackson belted a 2 RBI double in the bottom of the sixth to put Norfolk State on the board, but Shaw's arm stopped any remaining effort from the Green and Gold.

Swain led the Jaspers with a 3-for-4 outing at the plate and 1 RBI. Perez earned another multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with 2 RBI. Hansen, Frankie Marinelli, Dylan Mayer, and Logan Pfannenbecker all tallied hits for the Jaspers.

Bats remained hot in game two of the series as the Jaspers jumped to a 6-0 lead after batting around in the top of the first. A pair of 2 RBI singles from Marinelli and Andreaus Lewis highlighted the charge. Manhattan tacked on seven more runs over the next eight innings, including a four-run jaunt in the sixth.

"Bats came alive today and the boys came ready to play," added Miller. "Winning the series is great, but I know they want more and will come ready to play tomorrow."

A stellar effort from the mound kept the Spartans at bay on the backend of today's doubleheader.  Mattera (1-1) was credited with the win after 5.0 innings of work, claiming 6 strikeouts. Connor O'Neil worked 3.0 innings of relief with 4 strikeouts and Pat Benn closed out the night snagging 2 strikeouts in 1.0 innings of work.

Following tomorrow's meeting with Norfolk State, Jasper Baseball will continue its road stretch with a three-game series at Marshall University. Game one against The Herd (1-5) is set for a 3 p.m. first pitch at Jack Cook Field on Friday, March. 1.
