Edison, NJ - Bob McCloskey Insurance (BMI), a corporate partner of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), has awarded one of its two postgraduate scholarships to former Manhattan College men's lacrosse player
Connor Flannery. Former Fairfield University rowing member Chloe Scherpa earned the league's second postgraduate award.
"MAAC student-athletes are expected to demonstrate their commitment to academic excellence and athletic competitiveness, and both goals are fully exhibited by Chloe Sherpa and
Connor Flannery," notes MAAC Commissioner Rich Ensor. "I congratulate them and their families for receiving the BMI Scholarship awards that will assist in their postgraduate studies."
As part of its agreement with the MAAC, Bob McCloskey Insurance provides postgraduate scholarships to one male and one female student-athletes from the league's member institutions. The intent of the scholarships is to promote and encourage academically and athletically accomplished student-athletes to continue their education by attending graduate school. As part of the selection process, the committee evaluates athletic and academic achievements, as well as campus involvement, community service, volunteer activities, and demonstrate leadership.
"In his time at Manhattan College, Connor was a great representative of our program and our school," said Head Coach
Drew Kelleher. "He is very deserving of this award and our staff could not be more proud of him."
Flannery was a four-year student-athlete on Manhattan College's men's lacrosse team. In his four years at Manhattan he not only represented the Jaspers on the field as a letterwinner, but as a member of Manhattan's Student Athlete Academic Committee (SAAC) during the 2016-17 academic year. During his time as a student-athlete, Flannery received MAAC All-Academic Team honors three years in a row (2015-17). He served as the team liaison for community service where he spearheaded team involvement within the community. Flannery led the team in the NCAA Team Works Competition, placing second individually and the Manhattan men's lacrosse were ranked in the top-five in community service hours in the NCAA as a team.
Off the field, Flannery volunteered his time in the community, with organizations such as, American Cancer Society, St. Baldrick's Foundation, Cards for a Cure, One Love Foundation, Susan G. Komen, and the National Down Syndrome Society. In the classroom, Flannery graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in International Studies in just three years and has been on the Dean's List every semester. Currently, Connor is enrolled in the Manhattan Graduate School, studying Organizational Leadership with the hopes to go on to study International Law.
Scherpa was a four-year member of the Fairfield University rowing team and served as team captain her junior and senior seasons. During her collegiate careers, she was named to the MAAC All-Academic team three consecutive years (2015-17), recipient of the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association National Scholar Athlete award three years in a row (2015-17), and received the New England Rowing Championships All-Scholar Award (2016). Scherpa was also named to the Dean's List every semester, and received honors from the English, Jesuit, and National Honor Societies.
She spent time as a Service Learning Associate with Fairfield University's Service Learning program where she would lead classroom projects and weekly reflections. Scherpa served on the Service Learning Advisory Committee as a student representative, and volunteered her time with Special Olympics, Meters for Myeloma, St. George Cathedral Glendi Greek Festival, Fairfield University's Girl Scout Day, and Cesar Batalla Elementary, as a bilingual tutor. Scherpa, who graduated from Fairfield University this past May with a B.A. in English Literature and Cultural Studies, is currently enrolled at the University of Connecticut School of Law, where she looks to earn her Law Degree within the next three years.
