Stony Brook, NY - The Manhattan College women's basketball team dropped its first game of the 2017-18 season in a 74-59 loss to nonconference opponent Stony Brook on Saturday, November 11 at Island Federal Credit Union Arena. Senior center
Kayla Grimme (Altoona, PA / Altoona Area), who started the game with 698 career rebounds, pulled down her 700th in the first quarter of play.
Senior center
Mikki Guiton (Schwenksville, PA / Perkiomen Valley) led the Jaspers' scoring with 17 points. Senior guard
Amani Tatum (Cambria Heights, NY / James Madison) posted 10 points, seven assists, and four steals.
Guiton set the early pace for the Jaspers, scoring nine of the team's 20 first-quarter points. Manhattan shot 60 percent from field-goal range in the first, including an NBA-range three from sophomore guard
Gabby Cajou (Stony Point, NY / North Rockland) as the buzzer sounded the end of the quarter. The shot put the Jaspers up 20-17.
But the momentum shifted in the second quarter, as Stony Brook outscored the Jaspers 19-9. Six Stony Brook players scored in the period, including Jerrell Matthews, who contributed six points on 3-5 shooting from field-goal range, while also pulling down three rebounds. The Jaspers' five turnovers in the second quarter (a total of 10 in the first half), made it difficult for Manhattan to get a run going against Stony Brook's hot offense. At halftime, the Seawolves led 36-29.
Stony Brook scored the first nine points of the second half, stretching to a 16-point lead at the 7:25 mark in the third quarter. After both teams traded a pair of layups, however, the Jaspers went on a 9-0 run over the next minute and a half, cutting the Seawolves' lead to seven. But Manhattan was unable to shutdown Stony Brook's Shania Johnson, who scored 10 of her game-high 20 points in the third. The Seawolves ended the quarter again up 16.
Capitalizing on three quick Stony Brook turnovers, the Jaspers scored the first five points of the fourth, narrowing Stony Brook's lead to nine with 7:22 left to play. But Manhattan was unable to close the gap further, and the Seawolves went away with the victory in this season opener.
