RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Courtesy of a converted penalty kick by senior captain Alex Shackley (Las Vegas, Nev. / Palo Verde) in the 102nd minute, the Manhattan men's soccer team blanked Niagara, 1-0, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action at Gaelic Park on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Jaspers improve to 2-6-1 overall, including 2-2 in league play. Niagara falls to 1-9-3, and 0-3-1 against MAAC opponents.

The penalty was controversially awarded to Manhattan after the ball struck the arm of a Niagara player in the box.

The late winner by Shackley coupled with superb defense from Manhattan throughout the afternoon led to the squad picking up its second conference victory of the fall. Despite Niagara taking six shots, the Jaspers defense held the Purple Eagles to no shots on goal, as freshman keeper R.J. Noll (Yelm, Wash. / Yelm) posted the second clean sheet of his rookie campaign.

Manhattan outshot Niagara 18-6, including a 4-0 edge in shots on target. The Jaspers also held a 13-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Manhattan will return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 14, when the team hosts Quinnipiac on breast cancer awareness night at Gaelic Park. The opening kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
