RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Manhattan College's Michael Alvarado '14 has begun his professional basketball career in Puerto Rico as a member of the Capitanes de Arecibo of Baloncesto Superior Nacional. Alvarado, who is of Puerto Rican descent, competed for the under-18 Puerto Rican national team during the summer of 2010.
The league is arguably the best professional basketball league in Puerto Rico. Alvarado's teammates include former New York Knick Renaldo Balkman and former Los Angeles Clipper and Miami Hurricane Guillermo Diaz.
A third team All-MAAC guard for the Jaspers during the 2013-14 season, Alvarado was the team's co-captain and floor general. He helped guide Manhattan College to the 2014 MAAC championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance against the defending national champion Louisville Cardinals. Alvarado scored 10 points and dished out three assists in 28 minutes in that game.
