RIVERDALE, N.Y. -
The drought is over. The Manhattan women's soccer team picked up its first conference victory of the season on Sunday defeating Iona (3-10-1, 1-1-1 MAAC) 2-1 in New Rochelle, N.Y. Senior forward Caroline Morse provided the game winning goal in the 12th minute and sophomore forward Kayla Howden punched in an insurance goal in the 52nd minute to snap a four game winless streak.

Morse posted her team leading fifth goal of the campaign when she teamed up with freshman Alex Iovine to get Manhattan (3-9-1, 1-3-0 MAAC) on the board 11:50 into the contest. It was Morse's 12th point this season and Iovine's first point of her career.

Manhattan carried the one goal advantage into the break, thanks in part to a solid effort in net by Lady Jaspers' goalkeeper Kara Davis who posted four saves in the match. Davis also received good support from the Lady Jaspers' defensive unit which featured Kara Bucci, Devon Lutz, Claire Reinhard and Iovine.

Howden extended the Lady Jaspers lead to two just 6:20 into the second period when she notched her first goal of the season. The unassisted tally was the second of her collegiate career. Gaels' freshman goalkeeper Trista Rivera was lit up for both goals, despite making five saves on the afternoon.

Iona eventually broke up the Lady Jaspers shutout in the 75th minute when junior forward Kerrie Deignan capitalized on a pair of passes from Gabriella D'Aprile and Christina Tesoriero.

Manhattan looks to carry its momentum into the weekend when the Lady Jaspers begin a critical four game homestand, which features three MAAC contests. The Lady Jaspers start with Saint Peter's on Friday night as part of a men's and women's soccer doubleheader. Kick off is slated for 7:30 p.m. following the men's match with Canisius.
