RIVERDALE, N.Y. ? Manhattan College junior guard Darryl Crawford was selected to the All-Metropolitan Division I Men's Basketball Second Team and sophomore guard Chris Smith was named to the Third Team as announced on Wednesday at the 76th Annual MET Basketball Writers Association Awards Banquet at Giants Stadium Club in East Rutherford, N.J. The duo helped lead the Jaspers to a fourth place MAAC finish in 2008-09. Crawford averaged 14.4 points and 4.4 rebounds, while Smith added 13.4 points and 5.7 rebounds per game.
Crawford, a 2009 All-MAAC Third Team selection, led Manhattan and ranked top-10 in the conference in scoring, steals (1.4 per game) and free-throw percentage (74.1%). The New York City native scored in double-figures in 20 games this season, which includes six 20-point performances and a career-high 33 point effort in the regular-season finale at Saint Peter's.
Crawford was named Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association Player of the Week twice (Dec. 22 & Feb. 17), tying for the most weekly honors by a student-athlete this season. He was also selected MAAC Co-Player of the Week on Dec. 22.
Crawford returns to Riverdale for his final season after finishing out the 2008-09 campaign strong. Over the final 10 contests he averaged 19.2 points, 4.5 rebounds, 1.7 steals and shot 44.4% from the field. Crawford is 27 points shy of joining Manhattan's illustrious 1,000-point club.
Smith scored in double-figures in 20 games during the 2008-09 campaign, and recorded two double-doubles. He led the Jaspers in rebounds and was second in scoring, while also finishing in the top-15 of the MAAC in both categories. Smith was named Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association Player of the Week and MAAC Co-Player of the Week in mid-December after recording a career-high 35 points in a victory over Princeton.
Six MAAC players were named to an All-Metropolitan Team, but Manhattan was the only league member to have two players earn the prestigious honor.
