Riverdale, NY (March 27, 2004) - The Lady Jaspers in their season opener fell to Mount Saint Mary's with the score of 16-6. The Lady Jaspers were led by Senior
Mary Dudek who tallied two goals and two assists. The loss drops Manhattan 2-3 overall and improves the Mountaineers record 4-3.
Dudek got the scoring started 1:18 into the game after she received a pass from
Jenny Carman. The Lady J's would not hold onto the lead for long as Mountaineer Nicole D'Angelo scored at the 4:59 mark tying the game, 1-1. About two minutes later Mount Saint Mary's took a 2-1 lead off a goal by Ellie Keener who was assisted by Kim Keene. Keener and D'Angelo would score two more goals before Lady Jasper
Victoria Carman scored an unassisted goal with 18:77 left to play in the first half making the score, 4-2.
Mount Saint Mary's Casey Paris scored off a pass from teammate Jen Davison. The Mountaineers were up, 5-2, before
Catherine Dunbar received a pass from Dudek and scored the last goal in the first half for Manhattan. Before the half was over Mount Saint Mary's would score five more times taking a 10-3 lead.
In the second half, Manhattan's defense kept the Mountaineers to six goals. The first goal came in the 33rd minute by an unassisted goal by Keene. Eleven seconds later Katie Mason scored off a pass from Erin LaMotte, making the score, 12-3. Mason scored one more time before Lady Jasper Dunbar scored her second goal of the game off a free position shot.
With 19 minutes left to play Dudek connected with
Jamie Carter earning her second assist of the game decreasing the lead, 13-5. The goal was Carter's first of the game. Manhattan's final goal came in the 44th minute when Dudek scored an unassisted goal making the score, 14-6. The Mountaineers scored two more times making the final score, 16-6.
Freshman goalkeeper
Ashley Devins earned eight saves for Manhattan, while Mount Saint Mary's starter Naomi Campano also earned eight saves.
The Lady Jaspers are back in action tomorrow when they host Longwood University at 10 am.
