Softball Finishes Day 2 Of Mustang Classic

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Manhattan Jaspers softball team (3-9), dropped its pair of contests at the Mustang Classic against the Spartans from San Jose State (3-10) and the host Mustangs from Cal Poly (1-8) by the final scores of 15-3 and 8-2 at Bob Janssen Field on Saturday.

GAME ONE: Manhattan 3, San Jose State State 15 (F/6)

  • After neither team got on the board in the opening frame, Samantha Kelly drove home Kendall Penny in the home half of the second, as both hit doubles.
  • To start the third, San Jose State blasted a tying two-run shot before tacking on a pair of base hits to increase their run total to three by innings end.
  • Two separate two RBI singles added four more insurance runs onto the Spartans side of the scoreboard in the fourth inning.
  • Caitlin Mullen pitched the most effective stretch from the circle, allowing one earned run in an inning and a third on just three hits.
  • With the score at 15-2, Kelly connected on another single to collect her second RBI of the day, ending the game at 15-3.
GAME TWO: Manhattan 2, Cal Poly 8
  • In the nightcap, it was the Mustangs who got out to the initial lead, as a three-run home run started things off after two base hits.
  • More than doubling their advantage by the fourth, Manhattan finally got on the board in the fifth inning after a Brianna Estevez single scoring Mullen from second.
  • A wild pitch forced a double steal, bringing Isabella Coulman racing home from third.
  • Mullen once again proved to be versatile, taking on the final three and a third innings from starter Karissa Spring, giving up two earned runs on four hits
