Manhattan College Alumni Launch The 1 Train Collective in Support of Jasper Athletics

The 1 Train Collective a group launched by Manhattan College alumni, have created an official collective and Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) organization to support Jasper athletics.

The mission of The 1 Train Collective is to enhance the Manhattan College student-body experience; and to empower student-athletes to maximize their potential by offering support and opportunities to leverage their Name, Image & Likeness in the Manhattan College community. The goal is to deepen connections between students, alumni and fans to build upon the Jasper athletics' tradition of excellence.

"We are proud to create Manhattan College's first NIL collective to assist the College and its student-athletes. Our first step will be to initially focus upon Men's Basketball with the intent that this provides a successful model for all of our athletic teams," said Brendan O'Brien, a 1997 Manhattan College graduate and a former Jasper basketball player who is now a Managing Partner at Gold Coast Wealth Management.

O'Brien and other Jasper alums created The 1 Train Collective – Manhattan College is located at last stop of the #1 Broadway Local subway line – to facilitate donors and members to support and engage with the Manhattan College athletics.

"Manhattan College has been blessed with passionate and generous alumni and this innovative The 1 Train Collective is yet another proactive example of how they continue to support our mission and students. My thanks to everyone involved in this initiative," said Milo Riverso '81, the president of Manhattan College.

"Manhattan College is appreciative for our alumni who have engineered this pivotal The 1 Train Collective," said Irma Garcia, Director of Athletics at Manhattan College.  "College sports have dramatically changed in recent years, and this collective provides support for our student-athletes and underscores Manhattan College's position as a top destination for student-athletes interested in studying and competing in New York City."

Brendan O'Brien '97 leads the The 1 Train Collective with an Advisory Board comprised of Bob Byrnes '68, Chris Hughes '74, Tom Lindgren '78 & Kevin Monaghan '77.

The NCAA approved an NIL policy in 2021 that allows NCAA student-athletes to be compensated for their name, image and likeness. These NCAA rules allow alumni, fans, and other donors to compensate student-athletes through The 1 Train Collective provided such compensation:
  • May not be considered "pay for play."
  • Must be in exchange for services provided by the student-athlete.
  • Must also abide by NCAA NIL guidelines/bylaws, New York State NIL law and Manhattan College NIL protocols.
