EMMITSBURG, MD. –
RJ Decker earned the gold medal in the hammer throw on Day One of the MAAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships as the Jaspers currently sit in third with 31 points.
Decker finished with a top mark of 63.28m (208-211) while
Joseph Pelio and
Myron Corpuz earned the Jaspers five and three points respectively with top marks of 51.87m (170-02) and 50.14 (164-06).
Decker was not the only medalist today,
Michael Hennelly took silver in the 10,000m, finishing the race in 31:15.30.
The Jaspers found great success in the prelims, qualifying a litany of runners for tomorrow's championship races. Both
Kaya Simpson and
O'Dell Holland, Jr.. qualified for the 110m hurdle in times of 15.05 and 15.71. Simpson also earned a spot in tomorrow's 400m hurdle race, finishing today's prelim with a time of 56.61, which is a new PR for the sprinter.
Noah Jefferson qualified in the 400m in flying colors, winning his heat with a time of 47.96.
The 800m featured a pair of Jasper qualifiers, with
Quemarii Williams and
Johnelle Joe earning spots in the championship with times of 1:54.59 and 1:54.10.
Returning to the field,
Jackson Haft secured five points for the team with a fourth-place finish in the pole vault, clearing 3.95m.
Brian Oduor finished ninth in the long jump with a leap of 6.33m (20-09.25).
The 3000m steeplechase featured
Brendan Lucey and
Dean Mayo finishing the race in 10:08.58 and 10:44.39. Lucey's time was a new PR.
