Jaspers Host Manhattan Invite & Senior Day

RIDGEFIELD, N.J.- The Jaspers got back to the racecourse Saturday afternoon, sending out a fleet of two eights and two fours to race Stockton, Skidmore, and MAAC opponent Iona.

Racing started at noon as the Women's Varsity 8+ opened the first thousand meters stroke for stroke with rival Skidmore before falling off the pace in the final minutes. The boat of Kerry Sullivan (cox), Katie Martone, Lauryn Hughes, Morgan Etta, Emily Hughes, Morgan McLean, Olivia Stewart, Maura McCarthy, and Janine Gayanelo clocked in at 7:33 ahead of Iona (7:36) and Stockton (7:38).

Next down the course was the Women's Novice 4+ and Women's Varsity 4+.

The Jaspers battled in the Novice 4+ trading positions with Stockton twice and ultimately edging them out by less than a second with a time of 8:52. Iona won the Novice race in 7:41. The Varsity 4+ race saw an almost identical race as the Varsity 8+ race earlier in the day. The four of Elyse Holmes (cox), Katie Martone, Lauryn Hughes, Maura McCarthy, and Janine Gayanelo took an early move with Skidmore out ahead of the other two boats falling just short of the first-place finish in a time of 9:02.

The final race of the day was the Women's Second Varsity 8+ of Elyse Holmes (cox), Maeve McNally-Cullum, Brianna Scollan, Amamna Touse, Lauren Wright, Dana Shandon, Olvia Herera, Jackie Lubarsky, and Claire Vrendenburg jumped out to an early lead, which they held for the majority of the race. The final minute of the race saw a challenging move from the field and left them with a third-place finish in 7:49, only six seconds behind first-place Skidmore.

"We put out a fantastic effort for our first race and began the season on a high note. Although we identified some opportunities for improvement, all boats came out strong, and we are excited to see how we continue to progress throughout the season," said interim head coach Kate Hickes

After racing concluded, the Jaspers had an opportunity to celebrate with their four seniors and their families for senior day.

Coxswain Elyse Holmes is a Communications Major with a Sports Media Concentration.

Starboard Standout and MAAC 40th anniversary team member Emily Hughes is a Biology Major who will continue her education next year in Genetic Counseling.

Brianna Scollan, a Biology Major, will continue her education in a Physical Therapy Program next year at Columbia University.

Lauryn Hughes completed her Undergrad in Marketing and Management and is currently working towards her MBA at Manhattan College.

The Jaspers return to Overpeck on April 3, when they will host Fairfield and Sacred Heart Universities.
