Riverdale, NY - With the cancellation of spring sports for the 2020 campaign, Manhattan Athletics has changed its ATAX Student-Athletes of the Week segment to an ATAX Senior Spotlight. Moving forward, seniors from all of Manhattan's spring sports will be featured three times a week.
Today's spotlight features track and field sprinter
Niasia Boone (Morrisville, PA / Pennsbury) and golf's
Georgy Chernov (Postovo, Russia / Keiser University).
Manhattan's 2019 Female Student-Athlete of the Year, Boone is a six-time MAAC Champion, earning gold medals in the indoor 200-meters and 4x400, as well as the outdoor 100-meters, 200-meters and 4x100. At the 2020 MAAC Indoor Championships, she earned two medals, defending her 2019 title in the 200 and winning bronze in the 60-meter race by tying her PR of 7.83. Boone qualified for the 200-meter finals at the ECAC/IC4A Indoor Championships with an indoor PR of 24.64 and earned a top-10 finish in the event finals.
"Niasia had battled with some injuries this season, so she was only able to compete for half of the season, but she is a natural leader and when she rejoined the team you could see a shift in everyone's attitude and the competitiveness they had amongst each other at practice," said Assistant Coach
Briana Haith.
A two-year member of the golf program, Chernov finished alone in 32nd at the 2019 MAAC championships in Lake Buena Vista, FL. He also led the team in birdies at last year's Towson Spring Invitational, where he averaged a 4.88 tally (-1) on par-5 holes. Chernov was the Jaspers' third finisher at the 2018 Bucknell Invitational, as well.
"I could just sit on the practice range and watch Georgy hit golf balls all day," said Head Coach
Phil Wildermuth. "His swing is that beautiful. I wish him the best of luck in his future."
