Riverdale, NY - With the cancellation of spring sports for the 2020 campaign, Manhattan Athletics has changed its ATAX Student-Athletes of the Week segment to an ATAX Senior Spotlight. Moving forward, seniors from all of Manhattan's spring sports will be featured three times a week.
Friday's Senior Spotlight focuses on men's cross country and track and field's
Adam Alshoubeki (Monroe, NY / Monroe-Woodbury) and women's lacrosse's
Emily Sandford (Floral Park, NY / Sacred Heart).
A four-year member of Manhattan's distance squad, Alshoubeki recently set a personal record in the indoor 800-meters at Boston University's Valentine Invitational, coming in with a time of 1:56.37. He also earned an eighth-place finish in the event at the 2020 MAAC Indoor Track and Field Championships, recording a time of 1:56.83. At the MAAC Outdoor Championships last year, Alshoubeki was a member of the men's 4x800 team that earned a seventh-place finish with a time of 8:09.00. He has also earned MAAC All-Academic Team honors four times.
"Adam is relentless," said Head Coach
Kerri Gallagher. "He was the guy I didn't need to worry about doing the work, if anything I had to hold him back. Throughout his career he faced injury and setbacks with maturity and perseverance. He is a model example of dedication and desire for the rest of the team. His contributions to the team on the track were valuable, but more than anything the impact of his example is what will last for years to come in our program."
Sandford was a four-year member of the women's lacrosse program, earning All-MAAC Rookie Team honors in 2017. She started 46 games across her four seasons in the Bronx, totaling 34 goals and 17 assists for 51 career points. In 2020, Sandford led the Jaspers with 16 draw controls, and was second on the team with 10 goals. She had a career day against Detroit Mercy on February 29, matching a career-high with four goals, while also winning four draw controls in a 15-11 victory. Sandford was also active on campus, serving as the treasurer for Manhattan's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
"I am grateful to have had the opportunity to coach Emily," said Head Coach
Jenna Dingler. "She consistently made everyone around her better. She challenged her teammates to think differently and to compete at a higher level. Her hard work and dedication set such a high example for our underclassmen. Emily is one of the most well-rounded players I have ever coached and I am certain that she will make a big impact wherever she goes next."
