Women's Rowing Competes At Dad Vail Regatta

Led by freshman coxswain Elyse Holmes, the Manhattan Women's Rowing Team turned in another impressive performance at the 2019 Dad Veil Regatta.

"It was a hard-fought two days of racing by all the crews," said Head Coach Alex Canale. "I am especially proud of the rowers that stepped up to fill foreign positions. Leah (McGovern) moved to the starboard for the weekend in the 2V, Carra (Toner) competed in the double scull, Shannon (Colford) returned to the line-up in the double skull and of course Elyse (Holmes), who coxed the Varsity 8, before posting a fourth-place finish in the varsity single."

Holmes notched a mark of 8:42 in taking fourth in the Women's Single.

In the varsity 8+, the Jaspers raced to a 19th-place finish (7:04.06) on Friday, before taking second in their next heat with a mark of 6:51.94. Comprising the squad was Rachel Foertch (So., Syracuse, NY / C.W. Baker), Kate Sexton (Jr., Wrentham, MA / King Philip Regional), Rebecca Arcomano (Sr., Saugerites, NY / John A. Coleman Catholic), Zoe Nikolopoulos (Jr., Long Valley, NJ / West Morris Central), Elizabeth McCabe (Jr., Alexandria, VA / Bishop Ireton), Amayda Arroyo (So., New York, NY / Repertory Company) and Emily Hughes (Fr.) with Stroke Ella O'Brien (So., Hadley, MA / Hopkins Academy) and Holmes.

The Women's Varsity 4+ clocked a 8:26.74 (26th) in the opening heat, before defeating TCNJ, Purdue and Penn State in winning its next heat in a time of  9:16.94. The team consisted of Maria Blas-Perez (So., Woodstock, NY / John A. Coleman Catholic), Maura Mead (Jr., Columbia, MD / Howard) and Alexa Schmidt (So., Emerson, NJ / Emerson) with Stroke Kerry Brosnan (So., Mahopac, NY / Kennedy Catholic) and sophomore Coxswain Ashley Santana. 

In the second Women's Varsity 8+, the unit of Jaclyn Leighton (Jr., Wilkes-Barre, PA / Holy Redeemer), Caridad Price (Sr., Bergenfield, NJ / Bergenfield), Leah McGovern (Sr., Floral Park, NY / Sacred Heart Academy), Lisa Dominguez (Sr., Santo Domingo, DR / Bronx Leadership (NY)), Meredith Domaleski (Jr., Cutchogue, NY / Bishop McGann Mercy), Allison Eichhorn (Jr., Moorestown, NJ / Moorestown) , Shannon Forty (Jr., Westford, MA / Westford Academy) with Stroke Alia Flanigan (Sr., Sparta, NJ / Sparta) and Coxswain Shannon Gleba (So., Midland Park, NJ / Immaculate Heart) won its final competition of the weekend with a time of 7:06.52, bettering its previous mark of 8:34.54 from Friday.

Manhattan also had the duo of Carra Toner (Jr., Bel Air, MD / C. Milton Wright) and Shannon Colford (Jr., Epping, NH / St. Thomas Aquinas) compete in the Women's Double, as the pair was sixth in 12:45.07.

The Jaspers will return to action at the 2019 MAAC Championships, starting on Saturday, May 18 in Cherry Hill, NJ.
